Understanding GSM: What Fabric Weight Really Tells You

Grams per square metre measures mass, not quality. A 120 GSM fabric is not inferior to a 180 GSM one — they are simply built for different silhouettes.

For flowing garments — dupattas, gowns, layered ethnic wear — you want 45 to 130 GSM. For structured tailoring, pleated trousers and jackets, look at 150 to 190.

What matters more than the number is consistency. A lot that varies by more than three percent across rolls will produce garments that hang differently. This is where in-house lab verification earns its cost.

Ask your supplier for roll-wise GSM reporting, not a single catalogue figure. Any serious mill will provide it.
